Even though there are many different cuts available for engagement rings, most couples choose to stick to just a few popular ones.

The round cut is the most common of all stones. You may want to go with the round cut, because it is widely considered the most beautiful. Surrounding cuts in what are often called “Tiffany settings” or raised prong settings, are the characteristic idea of an appointment ring: a lone stone balanced just higher than the band of the loop with most experience of the sandstone to beam. A tiffany setting is ideal for a good round stone. There are few places to hide a small, muddy, stone.
Beautiful green emeralds really shine when cut into long rectangles. Not as ostentatious as the round cut, the emerald cut can carry a very large stone, show it to its advantage, yet appear quite traditionally formal. Also, the Princess style cut, is a square shaped cut stone, allows a 4 square, secure look with beautiful color and a lot of security that you won’t lose it. If mounted correctly these linear cuts can be very safe because of prongs on the corners and protecting the side.
One diamond that is very flexible from a design standpoint is the cushion cut diamond, it merges well with different stones, can balance both the shine and glitter of round cut diamonds with most of the dignity and grace of linear cut diamonds. The stone can be rounded off square or a modest rectangle by softening the corners and curving the sides.
Pear cut or tear drop diamonds are fine but the uneven form is harder to use in a stable setting. It is difficult to set a solitaire diamond, especially a pear cut stone, setting it wrong can make it look lopsided or off kilter, and the stone can, not match the final wedding ring design. These beautiful gems might be more appropriate for necklaces, earrings, or rings that are designed to work alone rather that together with a wedding ring.
One cut, known as the Marquise is typically cut in an oval shape, however, unlike a typical oval, the Marquise is sharply pointed on the ends. The Marquise is often used in rings with multiple stones. Choosing a central Marquise flanked by triangular trillion cut stones produces a stunning, more elaborate design.
Although there are certainly other gems, these are the most traditional and popular choices and come in a variety of gorgeous settings. If you master these few cuts, you have the basic knowledge of most classical engagement ring design.
