Independent truckers are finding it harder and harder to make a living. With gas prices and insurance rates increasing, it is very difficult to get enough jobs to make a decent profit. Add to that the federal regulations limiting the number of hours a trucker can be behind the wheel and you end up with fewer hours to earn a living. I am not trying to discourage you in any way, but I hope you have done enough research before you jump into a loan for a big rig that may not pay for itself if you can’t find enough work. It’s a great way to see the country, but it is a little risky in this economy.

If you have absolutely no money of your own down, but have descent credit try Arrow Truck Sales. They have locations in many states across the U.S. Worst case scenario to buy just any used truck, you would need at least $5,000 down. That is what I was told, and my credit is all bad. But they do have some good deals. Thats just to get the truck for you to run.
Then you either need to lease it to a company of which you (or your driver) will operate your truck you just bought under that companies operating authority. Using their DOT numbers, their fuel card program, etc. Often times most bigger companies will even pay for your base plates, permits, etc. provided that you remain with them for a year or so. Obviously though if they pay for all those items, especially your plates and IFTA stickers, they will take those back off of your truck if/when you choose to leave. If you want to get your own DOT authority, that will require more money and filing with the DOT (department of transportation) an application to obtain your own authority. There are some nice hoops you have to jump through with them for a year once you are given your own authority. Then if you have your own authority you still got to get yourself some customers, and negotiate your rates and what not to be successfull. It is certainly something that you could do if you could get the money together through financing or whatever to get it going.
